Jay County All Star Event

11/15/2014

The Jay County Robotics teams hosted a competition on November 15th.  There were teams from Indiana and Ohio competing at this event.  Our teams come in to this event having swept all tournaments this season; hopes were high to keep this going.

At the conclusion of the qualifying rounds, 1193A sat atop the leader board with a record of 6-0, the combined middle school team (1184A) finished qualifying in second with a record of 6-0.  The other teams did well also, 1193C finished qualifying with a 5-1 record and claimed the 4th spot.  The West Jay Middle School team (7515A) finished with a record of 5-1 and qualified 6th.  1193W finished with a record of 3-3, claiming the 16th spot, and 1193D finished with a record of 2-4, getting the 28th spot.

When it came to the alliance selection round, the Jay teams wanted to keep the tournament win streak alive.  1193A led off the alliance selection by choosing their alliance to be 1193A, 1193C and 1193W, in hopes to get 1193W qualified for the State tournament.  The second alliance lead by 1184A (the combined middle school team) paired up with a team from Crown Point and a team from Warsaw.  The West Jay team chose to play with a team from Zionsville and a team from Greenwood.  1193D found themselves in a place where they were chosen by a different school to play in the tournament.  They were picked up by an alliance from Crown Point and Rushlyvania, Ohio.

The tournament had the 1184A alliance playing the alliance including 1193D; the youngster alliance knocked off the high school team in the quarter finals.  The combined middle school team went to the semifinals and lost a hard fought series to the eventual tournament runners up.  The West Jay squad faced a tough alliance in their quarter final matches, and did not move on.  The A team alliance easily won their quarter and semifinal rounds, leaving the two best alliances to battle it out to crown a champion in the finals.  The finals went to a decisive third finals match.  They won with a score of 49-41.  During the tournament, the A team alliance scored an Indiana high score of 73 points.

Award winners for the Jay County teams were the winning alliance of 1193A, 1193C and 1193W.  1193W is now qualified for the State Championship.  The combined middle school team won another Excellence award for their continued dominance in the middle school division.

The Jay County Robotics teams competed at the Crown Point competition on Saturday November 8th in Crown Point, Indiana.  The teams came in with high hopes of continuing their recent success, they would not disappoint.

The top qualifier at the end of the qualification rounds was 1193C, last week’s winner, with a record of 7-0, extending their win streak to 19 consecutive match wins.  The second ranked team was 1193A, also a winner from a week ago, with a record of 6-1.  1184A (a middle school team with a combined roster of East Jay and West Jay students) finished qualifying in the 4th spot with a record of 6-1.  They were also the team last week who swept all the major awards (winners, Excellence and Design).  Team 1193D finished in the 10th spot with a record of 5-2 and the other Jay County High School team 1193D ended up 14th with a record of 3-4.  The West Jay squad (7515A) finished qualifying with a 2-5 record and a 19th ranking.

When the elimination rounds started, the Jay County teams wanted to keep the Jay County pride strong and pair up with each other.  1193C and 1193D paired up with a team from Plymouth to take on the tournament.  Last week’s winners, 1193A and 1184A joined forces again and brought a long a team from Zionsville to round out their alliance.  1193W picked up the West Jay team (7515A) in the first round of the draft and rounded out their alliance with another Plymouth team.

The elimination rounds were fierce, seeing the final round (the 1193C and 1193D alliance versus the 1193A and 1184A alliance) go to extra matches after splitting the first two matches and tying in the third.  In the fourth finals match, the alliance of 1193C and 1193D came out victorious in a 49-33 victory.  With the win, 1193D has now qualified for the Indiana State Championships in March (joining 1184A, 1193A and 1193C).  The alliance of 1193W and 7515A had a hard fought battle in the semi-finals where they eventually lost to the alliance lead by 1193A.

When it came time for the final awards, the Jay County teams were already excited, but the awards added a whole new reason for the excitement.  Team 1193C was announced as the Excellence Award winner, the highest award available in the VEX Robotics Competition.  They will now compete for the Excellence Award at the State Championships.

Jay County will be hosting a competition at the Jay County High School Auxiliary Gym on Saturday November 15th.  The event is free and open to the public and begins at 9am.  Feel free to stop in and see the great machines that these Jay county students have created!

Indiana Robotics held their 2nd event of the season at K. I. D. S. Inc. in Indianapolis this past Saturday. They had 33 teams sign up for the event.Zionsville had a strong showing, bringing 9 teams and one returning team that placed at Worlds last year. Indiana has 265 VEX Robotic teams this so far year.

Jay County came away with 5 of the 6 trophies and winning 4 more State spots. VEX has awarded 7 spots to the VEX State Championship and Jay County owns all seven of the VEX State robotics spots, split with three of their teams.

1193C came in second in the Qualifying round and headed the winning Alliance to win the Championship. They selected 1184A, who came in 3rd place, the Middle School Team made of students from East Jay and West Jay. Then with their 3rd selection they picked up 1193A last week’s Alliance Captains. The combined Jay County Team went through the championship round without a loss!

1193C team is made up with Seniors Evan Thomas, Tyler Munday and Nathanael Miller. Along with Junior Tristen Willis. 1193C dominated the day with their autonomous as well as being the only team that could build the complete “Sky-Rise” section.

1184A made up of two East Jay 6th grade students; Leah Hummel and Trevor Alicea, they picked up West Jay 7th grader Cody Knisely who helped solidify the team. They came up with the Design Award, Excellence Award, and where on the winning alliance with the other two Jay County Teams. They also place 3rd in the qualifying rounds. 1184A has been the only middle school team at the 1st two VEX events.  The Excellence award is the highest award given at a VEX event. It has everything to do with how they did in the “Skills” events, scoring a 2nd in Programming and 10th in the Driving skills. With a good placing in their interview about their engineering notebook competing against all High Schools teams. By combining all of their scores they out placed all of the High School teams at this Event. With them wining the Excellence award at this level they are able to compete in this category at Worlds against Middle Schoolers, if they can make it out of the State Tournament in March.

1193A did the same thing last week walking away with all three of the same awards that 1184A did this week. Being picked as the third team in an all Jay County alliance in the championship. 1193A is made up of Brain DeRome, Seth Trissel, Tiffany, Robinette, Adrian Hudson, and Jade Zorn.

Jay County has two more high school teams and two more middle school teams to get qualified for the State Tournament. Both of the high school teams were selected in Championship round. This weekend they will go to Crown Point to compete.  Then on November 15th we are hoping to have a big event at Jay County. With another VEX event held the same week in Indianapolis for Indianapolis schools only.

Jay County Robotics has decided not to compete in FIRST robotics this year. With teams already in the VEX State Tournament we will need to explore additional fundraising opportunities in the community. If you would like to schedule a demonstration or an opportunity to hear from the team about Jay County Robotics to your group or organization, please contact Doug Tipton at Jay County High School to get on their calendar this school year. You can also call him after school on his cell phone (260) 726-5096. Please note that Jay Schools are in a transition period on changing servers for their email accounts, if you have emailed Jay County Robotics and have not gotten a response, please call or try again!

As you can tell from the picture below, of all of the Jay County Robotics students that went last weekend, we have the largest number of female students that participate in robotics in the State of Indiana. We are right at 33% female students. We have had some good role models in the past. We have had a good participation of students that will continue in 4-year degree programs, tech schools, 2-year degree programs, military service, and/or going straight to the work force. For more information contact Jay County Robotics. Please call us with your ideas and your help.
