The Jay County Robotics teams competed at the Crown Point competition on Saturday November 8th in Crown Point, Indiana. The teams came in with high hopes of continuing their recent success, they would not disappoint.
The top qualifier at the end of the qualification rounds was 1193C, last week’s winner, with a record of 7-0, extending their win streak to 19 consecutive match wins. The second ranked team was 1193A, also a winner from a week ago, with a record of 6-1. 1184A (a middle school team with a combined roster of East Jay and West Jay students) finished qualifying in the 4th spot with a record of 6-1. They were also the team last week who swept all the major awards (winners, Excellence and Design). Team 1193D finished in the 10th spot with a record of 5-2 and the other Jay County High School team 1193D ended up 14th with a record of 3-4. The West Jay squad (7515A) finished qualifying with a 2-5 record and a 19th ranking.
When the elimination rounds started, the Jay County teams wanted to keep the Jay County pride strong and pair up with each other. 1193C and 1193D paired up with a team from Plymouth to take on the tournament. Last week’s winners, 1193A and 1184A joined forces again and brought a long a team from Zionsville to round out their alliance. 1193W picked up the West Jay team (7515A) in the first round of the draft and rounded out their alliance with another Plymouth team.
The elimination rounds were fierce, seeing the final round (the 1193C and 1193D alliance versus the 1193A and 1184A alliance) go to extra matches after splitting the first two matches and tying in the third. In the fourth finals match, the alliance of 1193C and 1193D came out victorious in a 49-33 victory. With the win, 1193D has now qualified for the Indiana State Championships in March (joining 1184A, 1193A and 1193C). The alliance of 1193W and 7515A had a hard fought battle in the semi-finals where they eventually lost to the alliance lead by 1193A.
When it came time for the final awards, the Jay County teams were already excited, but the awards added a whole new reason for the excitement. Team 1193C was announced as the Excellence Award winner, the highest award available in the VEX Robotics Competition. They will now compete for the Excellence Award at the State Championships.
Jay County will be hosting a competition at the Jay County High School Auxiliary Gym on Saturday November 15th. The event is free and open to the public and begins at 9am. Feel free to stop in and see the great machines that these Jay county students have created!
